First Strokes

4 min read
May 17, 2008. Finally, I can say that i am an artist.

Since childhood, i always loved art. I was confined with crayons, I didn't even know how to paint. We can't afford to enroll in art classes and no one in my family can tutor me so I learned on my own. I love joining contests but i don't win, not once. I can even even remember my first one. It was in Pilar College where me and 2 of my classmates joined an eggshell mosaic painting contest. We didn't win but its OK. I was just amazed because out of 40 students i was chosen to represent our school. I can remember my teacher's feedback to me. According to her my outputs are "neat". In high school i learned to use oil pastels since it is commonly used in poster making contest. Every year I join these contest, from Buwan ng Wika to Science Month and so, but still I didn't win even one contest. Anyway, that didn't hinder me to stop my passion. My classmates and my family are very supportive to me. I was even considered one of the class artist.

I took up BS information technology major in multimedia and animation in Ateneo because I felt i belong here. I was not wrong. I couldn't be more content in my life since I was attatched to this course. Unlike other students, i believe i have a unique perspective in my college life. Unlike other students I don't take my subjects very very seriously (especially the minors) because I thought I can't really integrate these knowledge in my future. Instead, i focus in my majors and my experiences because I believe that these are my foundation for my future. (I don't really understand other students on why they don't take schooling seriously. They're just wasting their time and money.)

Anyways, i can say that i did good in my one year in IT. My knowledge gave me lots of opportunities as early as now. During their summer arts program, the GAP trusted to give their photoshop class to me. Without a doubt, I accepted the offer. For one month, I gave my class the basic knowledge and also shared some of my secrets and experiences on using Photoshop and all. I was very happy to see my class grow. They had beautiful outputs and as a teacher, i couldn't be happier.

Apart of being a teacher for the first time, this summer i had a taste of being a student of an actual art class. Yes, for the first time, i can actually learn oil painting. And what's great is that it's for free and our instructor is a known artist in Zamboanga, Mr Rameer Tawasil. He is such a great artist and I really admire his passion for art. With my four other classmates, we had our first taste in painting. I was really amazed with myself because I could actually paint. We had 3 artworks. First, is a painting of a copy of a photo and the two were still life paintings.

Let's go back to May 17, 2008. This day, we had the culminating program for the summer arts classes. The event, called FIRST STROKES, is the graduation day for the students of the art classes and also a showcase of outputs with an exhibit. My students from my photoshop class graduated (FYI: Mr Tawasil is one of my students). I gave the outstanding performance to my youngest student Joboy Faundo from Montesorri who showed me an impressive performance the past days. But in general, everyone was very good. Of course, me and my 4 classmates also graduated in our painting class and I was the one awarded with an Outstanding Performance. I was really surprised and overwhelmed at the same time.

I thought the day was over. Me, Sir Rye and ate Vida (my fellow instructor) headed to the Finance Office and harvested the fruits of our labor. It all made sense to me now.
